“As the Engineering Manager for one of the top Dry Type Transformer Manufactures in the world, it is my responsibility to ensure that my company remains competitive. In order to do so we must constantly improve, look for new ways of doing things and identify those things which keep us from becoming more efficient.

An opportunity to improve throughput in our mechanical department was identified by our senior mechanical engineer. By moving away from our two dimensional AutoCAD based design system to an Intelligent Part Design Solid Edge based system, we would be able reduce process time and improve accuracy and efficiency.

My engineers had very limited training on Solid Edge and we only had one functioning licensed seat of SE in our department. We needed professional help with upgrading our hardware and software and making the migration to a Solid Edge Based system. Further to this we needed help to develop the IPD System and develop the families of parts that were needed to make the program work.

Past experience with the Manufacturing Technology Center, specifically Mr. Herb Bird, made my search for help, easy. I enlisted the help of MTC, explained my expectations and budget for the project and we quickly moved forward. MTC in conjunction with my team was able to put together a comprehensive project plan and timeline for the project. A unique “story board” using MS Power Point was developed and maintained by MTC. This made it very simple for my staff and business leaders to understand the steps we were taking and keep up with the progress of the project. Further to this MTC provided clearly defined invoices with the billed hours and a progress sheet for those hours included with each invoice.

MTC was able to help us develop a powerful tool in IPD. Developing new parts using the system, based on a top down design concept, is very fast and easy. In some cases we simply input the desired dimensions of the part and the system does the rest. A working solid model is produced and all parts drawings are rendered from that model. This will in many cases allow us to dramatically reduce design time, improve accuracy and save our company money.

In less than a year our mechanical engineering department has been transformed. We now operate with top of the line hardware and software. My engineers are properly trained on Solid Edge and have powerful tools to use for mechanical design. The IPD system now allows us to design our transformer mechanical parts very quickly and accurately. As our library of parts grows with each job, so does our efficiency. Which as I explained earlier is one of the keys to our success.
